Su grado var\u00eda entre poblaciones y depende de la composici\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica y de factores culturales y medioambientales. En este estudio se comparan dos poblaciones medievales musulmanas de Granada para comprobar si las diferencias en el entorno (urbano frente a rural) se reflejan en distintos grados de dimorfismo sexual en los huesos largos. Se estudian restos del cementerio urbano de Sahl ben M\u0101lik, y del rural de La Torrecilla. Se han seleccionado 66 individuos adultos del primero y 72 del segundo. Se han medido en cada hueso la longitud m\u00e1xima, per\u00edmetro m\u00ednimo y anchura de las ep\u00edfisis proximal y distal. Se ha calculado el \u00edndice de dimorfismo sexual (ISD) para cada variable y cada poblaci\u00f3n. El grado de dimorfismo sexual es mayor en La Torrecilla. Los resultados indican que las mujeres de los grandes centros urbanos pudieron haber jugado un papel m\u00e1s activo en la vida social y laboral que las de las \u00e1reas rurales y haber disfrutado de mejores condiciones de vida que se manifiestan en desarrollo corporal y disminuci\u00f3n del dimorfismo sexual. El principal objetivo de este trabajo es comparar dos poblaciones medievales procedentes de dos diferentes \u00e1mbitos (rural y urbano) de la provincia de Granada con el fin de observar posibles diferencias en su desarrollo muscular y consecuente estilo de vida a partir de 15 lugares de inserci\u00f3n muscular ligamentosa o tendinosa. La poblaci\u00f3n urbana, de 92 individuos, procede del cementerio de Sahl Ben Malik (Granada) mientras que la poblaci\u00f3n rural, de 91 individuos, pertenece al cementerio de La Torrecilla (Arenas del Rey, Granada). Two medieval archeological samples were selected for comparative purposes: a Christian sample (n = 5) from Palacios de la Sierra (Burgos), and a Muslim sample (n = 5) from La Torrecilla (Granada). Results obtained were compared with published data on other medieval populations of the Iberian Peninsula with the aim of improving knowledge on the diet of medieval populations, especially elite groups. Differences in the consumption of C3 and C4 plants were observed between Christians and Muslims, as previously reported. \u03b4<sup>15<\/sup>N values indicated social class differences. The diet of the Royal Family was characterized by mainly C3 plants and an extremely high animal protein intake characteristic of carnivores. Since the first vestiges of agriculture in Europe remains of C 4 plants were recorded but their overall proportion in the human diet remains unknown. Therefore, isotopic (\u03b4 13 C and \u03b4 15 N) composition of bone collagen from the skeletal remains (human and animals) of a Celtic population, Cenomani Gauls, from Verona (3 rd to 1 st century BC) in the NE Italy provide a new perspective on this matter. The \u03b4 13 C collagen values of 90 human skeletal individuals range between \u221220.2\u2030 and \u22129.7\u2030 (V-PDB) with a mean value of \u221215.3\u2030. As present day C 4 plants have \u03b4 13 C values around \u221211\u2030, which is equivalent to \u22129.5\u2030 for samples of preindustrial age, the less negative \u03b4 13 C values in these individuals indicate a diet dominated by C 4 plants. This palaeodietary study indicates that some European populations predominantly consumed cultivated C 4 plants 2100 year B.P. La investigaci\u00f3n se inici\u00f3 determinando el n\u00famero m\u00ednimo de individuos (NMI), sexo, edad y las patolog\u00edas mediante el estudio antropol\u00f3gico pertinente. La muestra analizada est\u00e1 compuesta por 70 individuos de ambos sexos y de un rango de edad, desde adulto a senil. El an\u00e1lisis de las patolog\u00edas dentales se realiz\u00f3 considerando la t\u00e9cnica de Lukacs (1989) clasificando las enfermedades dentales en funci\u00f3n de su etiolog\u00eda. Se analizan las lesiones relacionadas con procesos infecciosos, degenerativos, del desarrollo y gen\u00e9ticos que afectan tanto a las piezas dentales como a los soportes \u00f3seos. Se registr\u00f3 la presencia de caries, p\u00e9rdidas ante mortem, quistes radiculares, periodontitis, sarro, desgaste e hipoplasia del esmalte. The sample is mostly composed of well-preserved infants in their first months and years of life. In this study we combined isotopic (\u03b4<sup>15<\/sup>N and \u03b4<sup>13<\/sup>C) and anthropological evidence with the aim of investigating infant feeding practices in non-adult samples. 36 non-adults were selected and divided into seven age phases. The isotopic composition of their rib bone collagen was determined and related to the mean values of adults (n = 54) and animals (n = 7). \u03b4<sup>15<\/sup>N values ranged between 7.1\u2030 and 12.9\u2030 (AIR), with a mean of 10.2\u2030 (\u00b1 1.5\u2030), while \u03b4<sup>13<\/sup>C values ranged between \u2212 20.2\u2030 and \u2212 9.7\u2030 (V-PDB), with a mean of \u2212 15.3\u2030 (\u00b1 2.5\u2030). These results indicate the initiation of transitional feeding around six months. Significantly high \u03b4<sup>15<\/sup>N values in some infants up to two years old suggests prolonged breast-milk consumption. The necropolis was initially dated by archeologists between the XI and XII centuries AD and contains 57 individuals. The main objective of this study was to investigate the diet and the chronology of these individuals to improve the understanding not only of the diet but also of the population dynamics in an isolated rural site. The isotopic composition of their rib bone collagen was determined. \u03b4<sup>15<\/sup>N values ranged between 9.3\u2030 and 11.5\u2030, with a mean of 10.3 + 0.5\u2030 (AIR), while \u03b4<sup>13<\/sup>C values ranged between \u221217.6\u2030 and \u221219.0\u2030 with a mean of \u221218.2 + 0.4\u2030 (V-PDB). Radiocarbon results dated the individuals to between the XI and mid-XIII century. The stable isotopic results suggest a mixed terrestrial diet dominated by C3 cereals but including also animal products (e.g. meat and dairy products). El sujeto presenta signos correspondientes con un fuerte desarrollo muscular y tres lesiones craneales. Una de ellas es un traumatismo contuso con supervivencia y las otras dos son otro traumatismo y una trepanaci\u00f3n quir\u00fargica realizada sobre este. La intervenci\u00f3n fue efectuada por t\u00e9cnica de barrenado con un tr\u00e9pano met\u00e1lico y no muestra signos de supervivencia. El n\u00famero de individuos exhumados asciende a 182, aunque solo se ha podido asignar edad y sexo a 125 de ellos. El n\u00famero de individuos infantiles y juveniles es reducido, lo que proporciona un \u00edndice de juventud muy bajo. Entre los adultos los resultados sobre la mortalidad son los propios de una poblaci\u00f3n rural medieval que vivi\u00f3 bajo duras condiciones de vida, sobre todo las mujeres. Se analizan 109 tumbas, que conservan restos \u00f3seos, del cementerio de Tejuela\/Villanueva de Soportilla que fue excavado primeramente por Alberto del Castillo y despu\u00e9s por Aratikos Arque\u00f3logos. No hay una relaci\u00f3n clara entre tipos de tumbas y sexo, aunque las tumbas de ba\u00f1era son m\u00e1s comunes entre mujeres. No hay relaci\u00f3n con la edad a excepci\u00f3n de los ni\u00f1os muy peque\u00f1os, que est\u00e1n enterrados mayoritariamente en tumbas del mismo tipo. Aunque la longitud de las tumbas est\u00e1 correlacionada con la estatura de los individuos, no puede establecerse con precisi\u00f3n la edad o sexo del sujeto que se inhum\u00f3 en una sepultura que se encuentre vac\u00eda. In Southern Spain (Al-Andalus), sugarcane was mainly consumed by the elite, although its consumption became relatively widespread during the Nasrid Kingdom. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of the introduction of sugar on human diet and oral health by comparing patterns of caries in deciduous teeth between nonadult skeletal samples from two Nasrid populations (La Torrecilla and Talar\u00e1) and a comparative set representing various Iberian populations without access to sugarcane (from Bronze to Medieval Ages). We analyzed 770 teeth from 115 nonadults divided into three groups: infants under 2 years of age, nonadults presenting only deciduous teeth, and nonadults presenting mixed deciduous and permanent dentition. The frequency of caries is high in the Nasrid individuals and very low in the comparative sample. This finding is in agreement with contemporaneous written sources on the utilization of sugarcane in the diet and as a pacifier for infants during weaning. This zoonosis can be linked to human\u2013canid interactions, given the reproductive cycle of the parasite (from canids to herbivores\/humans as intermediate hosts), and it is commonly associated with agropastoral communities in both the past and present. However, it is not easy to identify a calcified hydatid cyst in the archeological record because of preservation problems and its similarity with other calcifications of biological and geological origin. We report the presence of two fragmented ovoidal calcified formations associated with human remains in different medieval Islamic cemeteries from the Kingdom of Granada in al-Andalus (Southern Iberia, 13th\u201315th centuries AD). These formations were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The localization, morphology, and composition of the calcifications indicate that they are hydatid cysts caused by E. granulosus, representing the first evidence of cystic echinococcosis in Islamic Medieval Europe. Between the 8<sup>th<\/sup> and 15<sup>th<\/sup> centuries AD, the Peninsula was characterized not only by complex political, cultural, and social transitions but also by major variations in the climate. The objective of this study was to examine differences in diet and mobility between distinct populations of the Peninsula and explore the possible relationship of diet, mobility, and culture with environmental variables and geographical settings. For this purpose, we obtained stable isotopic ratios of carbon and oxygen (\u03b4<sup>13<\/sup>C and \u03b4<sup>18<\/sup>O) from the enamel apatite of first upper incisors from 145 individuals at eight archeological sites that represent both Christian and Islamic communities and both rural and urban social settings. Results revealed a dietary difference between Christian and Islamic populations, observing a greater contribution of C<sup>4<\/sup> plants, possibly sorghum, in the diet of the latter, especially in a rural setting. The disparity in oxygen isotopic ratios between populations from the North and South of the Peninsula is consistent with modern climatic differences between these regions. In this line, intraregional variability in oxygen isotopic ratios may hint at diachronic occupation phases under varying climatic conditions. An observational, cross-sectional, and analytical study on mandibles from two diachronic groups, 15 mandibles from the medieval settlement of La Torrecilla (Granada, Spain) and 15 mandibles from current patients at the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Granada (Spain), matched by age and sex was conducted. The bone mass density was determined using the Mandibular Cortical Width Index (MCW) and the Mandibular Panoramic Index (PMI) in digital panoramic radiographs. In the medieval group, the values of bone mass density were correlated with those of two stable isotopes (\u03b413C and \u03b415N). The mean value of MCW in mm in the medieval group was 3.96\u2009\u00b1\u20090.60 (mean\u2009\u00b1\u2009standard deviation) and in the current group was 4.02\u2009\u00b1\u20091.01. The PMI was 0.33\u2009\u00b1\u20090.06 and 0.35\u2009\u00b1\u20090.08 in the medieval and current groups respectively, with similar results in both groups (p\u2009=\u20090.820 and p\u2009=\u20090.575). A negative correlation was found between both morphometric indices and the \u03b415N isotope (rs\u2009=\u20090.56, p\u2009=\u20090.030 and rs\u2009=\u20090.61, p\u2009=\u20090.016, respectively). The bone mass density in mandibles belonging to the two compared populations, determined by two quantitative radiomorphometric indices, is similar.
